In response to:AMPS Judging for small scale models - Posted by Jody Kelm on 11/28/2017 9:05 PM
All models are judged individually according to the assessment criteria for each particular type of model. This judging is done regardless of scale, so a 1/72 scale piece of armor is judged according to the exact same criteria as a 1/35 scale mode of the exact same subject.
Dioramas and vignettes each have their own specific assessment criteria, but again, all dioramas (and vignettes) are judged individually, regardless of scale, according to those criteria. This means that a 1/72 scale diorama is judged according to the exact same criteria as any 1/35 scale diorama.FWIW, I highly encourage you to read the "AMPS Rules for Competition Judging." http://amps-armor.org/Media/Documents/AMPSRules.pdf
I'd also recommend that you study the special rules for dioramas and vignettes to understand exactly what it is that the judges are looking for.
I'd also highly recommnd that you attend an AMPS Field Judges training seminar and volunteer to participate in the judging. The training explains and clarifies the rules, and experience with the judging will show you how those rules are put into effect.
BTW, there is also supplementary judges training for dioramas and vignettes. This training emphasizes understanding and assessing matters of composition which is very heavily assessed when judging both dioramas and vignettes. If you are a diorama or vignette builder, then you really should attend this. This supplental training is one of the very few opportunities that I know of that teaches model builders how to understand composition from the point of view of diormas and vignettes.
More judges are always welcome, and even though it's been said many times before, it's still true: one of the absolute best ways to improve your own skill and craft is participate as a judge. Looking critically at other folks' work is a sure way to learn how to look more critically and objectively at your own.
Besides which, AMPS judging is a fun, social activity that really adds to anyone's show experience. You'll meet new friends and spend your time sitting around looking at and talking about models while they're "served up" on trays like a meal at a fine restaurant. Spending a little time judging is whole hell'u'va more fun than sitting around bored in the hallway waiting for the next raffle draw!

The Armor Modeling and Preservation Society, Inc., or AMPS, was founded in July 1993. Since that time, AMPS has grown to nearly 600 members worldwide. Although AMPS's main function is as a modeling club, it is definitely a different type of modeling organization compared to IPMS or other mainstream groups. AMPS has a Constitution and Bylaws to govern how it is run, and the AMPS judging system rewards individual effort using a point system to minimize subjectivity.
