Dragon has a new Panzer IV Ausf.D tank in 1/72 scale available to expand their number of variants in this family. The Ausf.D was produced from October 1939 through to May 1941, with just 229 units manufactured in total. This type reintroduced a hull machine gun and it used an external mantlet (instead of an internal one used on earlier tanks). Armor protection was also improved, with 20mm armor now used on the sides. The tank retained the previously used short-barreled and low-velocity 7.5cm KwK.37 L/24 gun as its main armament.
The kit was fairly straightforward and easy to build. As a matter of fact, it could almost be a weekend project. It should be noted that Dragon has previously released 1/72 scale plastic kits of the Panzer IV family, but this is the very first of the Ausf.D., a 100% newly tooled kit. A new feature worth pointing out are the road wheels and track are made as one piece.
What's in the box?
The directions were clear, straightforward, and there was no confusion
The was basically one sprue of parts.
There is great detail and a lot to work with on the turret.
The main assemblies are complete and all of the parts fit nicely.
Standard set of decals and markings.
Close up of the tracks and road wheels which were one piece and fairly flexible. This was very nice on Dragon's part and easy to work with.
The kit is ready to paint.
I originally painted the kit in the standard panzer gray.
However, I couldn't leave "well enough" alone and threw on a winter camouflage scheme with an Archer decals aerial identification flag (as a historical symbol - and not political) to break up the contrast of the model.
On a side note - Dragon deserves some kudos for their outstanding customer service. During the build, I lost a tiny piece that was an integral part of the main gun. My first inclination was to scratch build it, but it was too delicate and unique. After contacting Dragon, via the Internet, they emailed me - that they were looking into it. About a week later - Viola! - the single tiny part arrived in the mail. Great work and customer service on Dragon's part.
Highly Recommended for Beginner to Advanced builders.
Thanks goes out to Dragon USA for this review kit.
