It's likely due to shipping costs. There is a worldwide shortage of shipping capacity, especially for anything shipped in containers. Docks such as LA are full of shipping containers that can't make it to their destination in the US because of lack of transport capacity, so new containers can't arrive. This is driving up shipping costs, and there is no end in sight. Get used to higher prices. 

Good thing we've all been hoarding kits in our stashes for years :-)

Yep. I knew there was a reason I "collected" all of those kits in my stash.  Now I can be picky about the new kits I buy. I'll be willing to pay a higher price for nice kit.
