What's Inside

In the continuing series on the War in Ukraine, volumes 4 & 5 focus on the main battle tanks of Russia and Ukraine spanning from 2014-2023.  These books go into much more detail of the systems and anatomy of these MBTs and is a wellspring for anyone looking to detail their modern builds. The Table of Contents is as follows:

  • Abbreviations and Acknowledgements
  • An Introductory Note
  • Introduction
  • 1- A Common Heritage: Soviet Legacy Tanks in Russian
  • 2- Russian Post-Soviet Tanks
  • Bibliography and End Notes

One of the acknowledgements in the Introduction I found interesting refers to a Ukrainian tanker "Shawshank Redemption" or SR who has videos on You Tube that prove to be a source of insight into Ukrainian tankers.

Reference photos and technical drawings abound in the book. One of the more interesting drawings that starts the book out is a genealogy chart of MBTs arranged in rough chronological order from the main design bureaus in Leningrad, Kharkov, and Nizhniy Tagil. Tanks featured in the book include the T-64, T-72, T-80, and T-90 variants with Chapter One primarily centered on the prior three and Chapter Two on the T-90 variants, T-72B3, and gas turbine T-80BVM.

Images of Soviet training posters and close up images of key components are distributed throughout. If data involving armor thicknesses, ammo storage, engine diagrams, and the like are up your alley, you will definitely want to pick this one up. Photos of tanks in action and knocked-out tanks fill in the blanks as well.

The center section provides fifteen color profiles of these tanks drawn by artist David Bocquelet and loads of ideas for schemes that might be alternatives to what the MBT kits provide. They are extremely well-drawn and provide some interesting ideas.

Conclusion

The War in Ukraine series continues to be an excellent source of information on events from 2014 leading up to the current conflict between Russia and the Ukraine. This volume and the subsequent one focuses on MBTs in combat and will be of particular interest to AMPS modelers and armor enthusiasts. Look for a review of volume 5 coming real soon...

Highly Recommended for anyone interested in the current war in Ukraine.
