What's Inside

As far as volume 2, well- it is pretty much as the title says-- this is a book featuring a boatload of photos of vehicles in various states of being weathered- I tried getting an exact number but there were nigh on 500+ and it got difficult counting after a while. The overall majority of the photos feature modern vehicles- both military and civilian types. There is also representation of WWI and WWII vehicles-- but these are for the most part modern photos of either vehicles used in reenactment shows or museum specimens. All photos are clear and in crisp color. The contents are as follows:

  • Introduction
  • Reviews for Volume 1 (this includes bits from the previous AMPS review as well as one from Armorama).
  • Dirt and Dust
  • Wheels and Wheeled Chassis
  • Engines, Electrical Equipment, and Instruments
  • Engineer and Plant Vehicles
  • Glass and Sights
  • Extreme Rust
  • Miscellaneous

I have included examples from each chapter, but there were loads to choose from and it wasn't easy to decide which to use. The number of photos per page varies- with some larger ones being two or three to a page, whereas others have 6 per page. Here are a representative sample of them:

Dirt and Dust:

Wheels and Wheeled Chassis:

Engines, Electrical Equipment, and Instruments:

Engineer and Plant Vehicles:

Glass and Sights:

Extreme Rust:

Miscellaneous...this includes everything from stowage and equipment, exhausts, tents, mounted pioneer tools, interior weathering, and more.

Conclusion

There is no doubt that this book is written with the modeler in mind. This book does not tell you how to achieve the weathering that is documented inside- nor is it even specifically about any certain vehicles. In fact, there are no captions whatsoever telling you which vehicle is shown in the photos. That is not the intention of the author- it is purely for one to see what vehicles (regardless of genre or time period) look like in various real settings. How one goes about achieving those finishes is relegated to the plethora of available resources in print and online already- this just gives one ideas of what things look like dusty, dirty, greasy, or rusty. It is a rather pricey book, but there are definitely no lack of photos inside to peruse through.

Highly Recommended for Beginner to Advanced builders.

Thanks goes out to Casemate Publishing for this review sample.
