TankCraft No. 46 – Panther Medium Tank: German Army, Waffen-SS and Luftwaffe Units, Eastern Front 1944

By Dennis Oliver

Dennis Oliver’s latest entry in the TankCraft series continues his detailed examination of the Panther tank, this time focusing on German Army, Waffen-SS, and Luftwaffe field units on the Eastern Front during 1944. As with other volumes in the series, the book follows a well-established and modeler-friendly format. A total of 64 pages contains 9 sections.

The opening sections provide a concise operational history, outlining how Panther battalions were deployed and organized during the increasingly desperate defensive battles of 1944. While not an exhaustive amount of information, the historical content offers enough context to understand unit markings, tactical use, and battlefield conditions to aid any armor modeler with creating an accurate model.

The real strength of this volume lies in its visual content. A large collection of archival photographs is complemented by high-quality color profiles that showcase a wide range of camouflage schemes, markings, and field-applied variations. These profiles are particularly valuable for modelers looking to replicate specific vehicles or develop plausible “in the field” finishes. There are a total of 12 pages of beautiful color drawings.

A dedicated modeling section highlights currently available kits and aftermarket accessories along with the model showcase. This portion of the book provides a useful overview of what is on the market and helps guide builders toward suitable starting points for Panther projects.

These sections of the book provide a useful overview of what is on the market and helps guide builders toward suitable starting points for Panther projects, not to mention a huge amount of ideas and inspiration.

The final sections cover technical details and production changes, including modifications introduced throughout Panther production. This overview will be a powerful tool to help modelers identify key features across variants and production batches, aiding in accuracy when building a specific vehicle.

Overall, this volume delivers exactly what has made the TankCraft series popular. This book is a balanced combination of concise history, strong visual references, and practical modeling guidance. It is particularly well-suited for modelers of all experience levels who want a single, accessible reference covering camouflage, markings, and available kits. The pages pictured in this review are only a tiny fraction of what this book contains. The Tankcraft series is one of my favorite and most valuable resources for scale armor modeling. Thank you for the opportunity to review this book.

Highly Recommended for Beginner to Advanced builders.

Thanks goes out to Casemate Publishers for this review book.
