History of the Schwere Panzer-Regiment "Bake"

By Norbert Szamveber

Hard cover book

312 pages of text

61 pages of photos, maps, and documents

“Predators: History of the Schwere Panzer-Regiment ‘Bäke’” by Norbert Számvéber presents a detailed and research-driven examination of one of the most formidable ad hoc German armored formations of the Second World War. Centered on Schwere Panzer-Regiment “Bäke,” the book documents the formation, operational employment, and eventual attrition of this elite unit during the winter battles of 1943–1944 on the Eastern Front.

Formed under the command of Major Franz Bäke, the regiment combined Tiger I and Panther tanks into a powerful combat group designed to act as a mobile reserve. Számvéber explains how this hybrid structure allowed for tactical flexibility, with Tigers providing long-range firepower and Panthers executing maneuver and exploitation roles. However, the book makes clear that despite the advantages, real-world limitations, particularly fuel shortages, mechanical failures, and insufficient infantry support, significantly reduced its operational effectiveness over time.

A major strength of the book is its operational depth. The author provides a thorough account of the regiment’s involvement in key engagements in Ukraine, including counterattacks in the Kirovograd sector and participation in the Korsun-Cherkassy relief operations. These sections illustrate the increasingly reactive nature of German armored warfare at this stage of the war, as units like Regiment “Bäke” were repeatedly committed to stabilize collapsing fronts rather than conduct offensive operations. Számvéber offers a balanced perspective by incorporating the growing effectiveness of Soviet forces. The Red Army’s use of massed armor, anti-tank defenses, and coordinated offensives is presented as a decisive factor that ultimately negated German tactical successes. This contrast between German tactical proficiency and Soviet operational superiority is a recurring theme throughout the book.

The book concludes with just over 60 pages of detailed maps, period photos, and other documents that further enhance the usefulness of the book by helping connect specific vehicles and units to particular engagements and locations. For modelers seeking to depict a vehicle within a defined time and place, this level of documentation is especially helpful. This book is highly recommended for those interested in Tiger and Panther operations, as well as for modelers seeking accurate reference material for winter Eastern Front subjects. These images highlight heavy weathering, including mud accumulation, worn or partially removed whitewash, and evidence of field repairs. The photographs also reveal a wide variety of stowage practices, such as externally mounted fuel drums, spare track links, and personal equipment, which reflect the realities of extended operations under logistical strain. Additionally, the ad hoc nature of the unit often resulted in inconsistent or mixed markings, offering modelers a range of historically plausible variations.

Overall, “Predators” provides a comprehensive look at late-war German armored operations through the lens of a unique and powerful formation. It successfully illustrates both the capabilities and the limitations of Germany’s heavy tank forces during a period when strategic conditions increasingly worked against them. For historians and modelers alike, the book offers valuable insight into vehicle appearance, battlefield conditions, and the practical realities of armored warfare on the Eastern Front. Highly Recommended for builders and historians alike.
