Tankcraft StuG IV Assault Gun

German Army and Waffen-SS Units, Eastern Front, 1944-1945

By Dennis Oliver

Soft cover, 64 Pages, 8.25"x 11.7", 100 color illustrations, 100 black & white photographs

Here we have the latest addition to the TankCraft series number 47, StuG IV Assault Gun: German Army and Waffen-SS Units, Eastern Front 1944–1945. As usual it provides an excellent combination of operational history, archival photography, camouflage references, and modeling guidance focused on one of Germany’s late-war armored fighting vehicles. Author Dennis Oliver continues the familiar TankCraft format, delivering a book aimed directly at armor modelers while still offering enough historical context to interest military history enthusiasts.

The book focuses specifically on the StuG IV during combat operations on the Eastern Front between 1944 and 1945 in 8 chapters: Introduction, The StuG IV units, Camouflage & Markings, Model Showcase, Modelling Products, Technical Details & Modifications, The Kriegsstarkenweissungen, and Product Contact Details. The author concentrates on unit service, field appearance, camouflage variations, and production characteristics that are especially useful to modelers.

One of the strongest aspects of the book is the large collection of wartime photographs. The images include a wide variety of vehicles from both Heer and Waffen-SS units, many showing field modifications, battle damage, winter camouflage, missing Schürzen, spare track arrangements, and other details valuable for anyone building an accurate StuG IV model. Several photographs clearly show the harsh conditions of late-war Eastern Front operations, which can provide excellent inspiration for weathering and diorama ideas.

The color profile section is another highlight. The side-view illustrations provide useful camouflage and marking references representing multiple units and time periods. Many of the schemes reflect the improvised and inconsistent late-war German paint applications seen during 1944–45. These profiles are particularly helpful because StuG IVs often displayed unusual combinations of Dunkelgelb, red primer, green striping, whitewash, and hard-edge camouflage patterns that differ considerably from factory-fresh vehicles.

As expected from the TankCraft series, the modeling section occupies a significant portion of the book. Several completed models are featured with step-by-step photography and finishing commentary. These sections demonstrate painting techniques, weathering approaches, and aftermarket detailing ideas that can be applied directly to current StuG IV kits from manufacturers such as Tamiya, Dragon, Rye Field Model, and Border Model.

Another valuable feature of this book is the information about production features and detail differences between different variants of the StuG IV. The book points out changes such as exhaust configurations, return rollers, road wheels, remote MG arrangements, and armor fittings. These details are extremely useful for modelers attempting to match a specific vehicle or variant.

Overall, StuG IV Assault Gun: German Army and Waffen-SS Units, Eastern Front 1944–1945 is a very useful reference for armor modelers interested in late-war German assault guns. The combination of wartime photography, camouflage references, production detail notes, and modeling examples makes it particularly valuable for anyone building a StuG IV. This book succeeds because it balances history and modeling in a format that is easy to reference at the workbench.
