AMPS 2017 International Convention

The 2017 Show committee from the host chapter, Northeast Military Modeling Association (NMMA), is working on the target list and H hour is April 20 – 22, 2017

This year our rally point will be in Danbury, Connecticut at the Danbury Crown Plaza Hotel, 18 Ridgebury Road, Danbury, Connecticut 06810.

This new location takes the forward edge of the modeling area north to the same venue used for Armorcon. This will be an all in one show with the hotel as the show venue using their ballrooms to host our vendors and the largest armor model display on the planet. As of 3/11/17:

Pre-registration for the contest runs from January 1st to April 13th.  Whether you pre-register or decide to brave the line-ups at the show, remember that all entrants have to be an AMPS member in good standing to compete in the Convention. You can pre-register and join or renew at a special combined rate. Click here for more details.

People are continuing to book rooms and it looks like a great show. We just added a few more rooms but the show rate ENDS March 21.

We have had a lot of support this year and a great line up for this year seminars. Feel free to look at the web site for the list and schedule

Off Site Trip

This year we will be able to go to the Military Museum of Southern New England. Attendees can go over on their own any time the museum is open on Thurs thru Sun. The museum will have their hatches open and will allow attendees to get in and crawl around whatever they want. People who visit the museum will still pay the entry fee.

More than 20 vendors and over 90 tables have been sold. A list of vendors are on the AMPS website show section. There are still some tables available, please contact Mike Reeves ( for table reservations.

As we approach the show if you have any kits on the shelf that is collecting dust, feel free to bring them to the show and donate to the raffle

 Show Schedule

 This Year's Show Theme

The general criteria for judging the Best Theme Award is contained on page 7 of the current AMPS Contest Rules. For 2017 only, we are further defining this criterion as follows:

The theme for the 2017 AMPS International Convention is “Smile for the Birdie.” This award is given to the model that most appropriately represents the theme selected for the convention. It may be given to either an INTERMEDIATE or ADVANCED level entry. In order to qualify for this year’s Best Theme Award, entries can be any vehicle/group of figures from any era after 1899, which can be matched to a specific photograph. This includes both historical and existing vehicles (e.g. "gate guards") but the model has to match in the aspect shown in the photograph. The modeler must provide a copy of the photograph as documentation. However, a 360 view of the subject is not necessary.

In cases where entrants are uncertain as to whether their model would qualify for the Theme Award the Chief Judge will be the final arbitrator and make the decision whether an entry fits the theme.

 AMPS Judging Principles

AMPS created a unique system to both judge the model and honor the modeler for artistic achievement and historical accuracy. It is a peer evaluation and mentoring and not a performance critique by experts. The system groups modelers that have similar skill levels and talents and rates the model in relation to the ability of the modeler rather than against the work of another modeler. The skill levels are Junior, Basic, Intermediate, Advanced and Master.

Each model is reviewed and evaluated on its own merits and never compared to another one. Established criteria determine the scoring of the model and qualify the modeler for Bronze, Silver and Gold awards. Each model is judged by a team of judges that score the model independently and the lowest score among the team is dropped. Constructive feedback is provided that sets a path to becoming a better, more skilled modeler.
