Newport News is great location with a rich history beginning from the landing at Jamestown in 1607 to the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, and the 1862 Peninsula Campaign where the famous Battle of the CSS Virginia and the USS Monitor took place, visitors can step back in time and learn about our nation's beginning while visiting the region. The region is plentiful with family friendly attractions, shopping, and dining.
Opposite a lake with a fountain, the Newport News Marriott at City Center is relaxed, modern business hotel. The theme of the AMPS 2021 show is Move It! – If it hauls, moves or transports, which ties in nicely with the U.S. Army Transportation Museum at Ft. Eustis which is only 11 miles from the hotel. This museum is the only museum dedicated to the preserving the history of U.S. Army transportation. The story of the Army's Transportation Corps, from horse-drawn wagons to all-terrain, armored vehicles, is told through models, dioramas and full-size vehicles and equipment at this unique museum. Visitors can explore the world of Army transportation with indoor and outdoor pavilions that feature wagons, trucks, airplanes, helicopters, locomotives, tugboats and experimental craft such as the "flying jeep."
Two miles from the hotel is the Virginia Living Museum, which is a combination aquarium, zoo, botanical garden and science center, exhibiting animals and plants native to Virginia. Visitors can see red wolves, bald eagles, a loggerhead sea turtle, fish with no eyes and frogs that change colors. Living exhibits depict natural heritage from the mountains to the sea, including a cypress swamp and a mountain cove. An observatory, state-of-the-art digital planetarium theater, outdoors boardwalk, living greenhouse and conservation garden add to the experience.

The Museum is filled with fascinating stories, captured in priceless artifacts that celebrate the spirit of the open sea. Designated by Congress as America’s National Maritime Museum, The Mariners’ Museum is one of the largest and most comprehensive maritime museums in the world. The Virginia War Museum is located six miles from the hotel. American military history unfolds at the Virginia War Museum. Collections of artifacts, weapons, vehicles, uniforms and posters trace the development of the US military from 1775 to the present. See a section of the Berlin Wall and a portion of the outer wall from Dachau Concentration Camp. Galleries include Women at War, Marches Toward Freedom and Visions of War, the museum's propaganda poster collection.
Ten miles from the hotel located in Hampton, Virginia is the Virginia Air & Space Center which features interactive aviation exhibits spanning 100 years of flight, more than 30 historic civilian and military aircraft, a hands-on space exploration gallery, unique space flight artifacts, and more! The Center is home to the Apollo 12 Command Module and the Orion PA-1 Test Vehicle.
The award-winning theme park Busch Gardens Williamsburg is just 18 miles from the hotel. Thrills and nature intersect at the park and provide a hidden adventure for all ages. Busch Gardens Williamsburg is the world’s most beautiful theme park, as voted year after year since 1990. The theme is classic Europe with artfully landscaped villages, like the Parisian streets of France, the hamlets of Scotland and Ireland including the Oktoberfest celebrations of Germany. In all, nine villages centered around six countries for exploration. The iconic double interlocking loop roller coaster Loch Ness Monster has been providing thrills since 1978.

History buffs can immerse themselves in the Colonial Triangle comprised of Colonial Williamsburg, Historic Jamestown and Yorktown Battlefield. The area includes historic sites and attractions from the first English settlement at Jamestown, to the end of the Revolutionary War at Yorktown, and the founding of a new nation at Williamsburg. Each location includes immersive exhibits, galleries, films and re-enactments. Distances vary from the hotel of 15 to 25 miles.
Shopping can be found throughout the region. Williamsburg Premium Outlets provides 120 stores in one location approximately 25 miles from the hotel. Locally owned hobby store Denbigh Hobby Center is six miles from the hotel and has been serving modelers for generations.
